E-Bike Surf Rack Fit Check
E-bike surf racks carry one board on edge beside the bike and are rated for about 25 lb of board. Seat-post shortboard racks suit boards around 7–8 ft; two-point longboard racks are sold for boards up to 9'6" to 11 ft, depending on the model; anything heavier, thicker than 6 in or longer than 11 ft belongs on a trailer. Riding in San Clemente? E-bikes aren’t allowed on the Beach Trail, and the State Beach trails to Trestles and Doheny are Class 1 only.

Why — every check, in order
- 01Board weight not enteredSide racks are rated for about 25 lb of board — most surfboards are well under that, but SUPs often aren't.
- 022.6 in thick fits a standard cradleStandard MBB bars are 3.8 in inside.
- 036'2": a shortboard rack worksMoved By Bikes rates its shortboard rack for boards “7-8 feet or less”; the Carver Mini goes to 8 ft.
- 04Check your mounting pointsSeat-post racks fit almost any bike. Longboard racks also need the head tube (clear of brake cables) or a rear rack, or frame bosses.
Riding to the beach
- 01Not on the San Clemente Beach TrailThe City of San Clemente prohibits e-bikes on the Beach Trail. Take the streets to the beach.
- 02State Beach trails: Class 2 not allowedCalifornia State Parks allows only Class 1 e-bikes on the trails at San Onofre (including the trail to Trestles), San Clemente State Beach and Doheny — throttle and Class 3 bikes stay on the roads.
- 03One hand on the bars, alwaysCalifornia Vehicle Code §21205: no carrying anything that keeps you from having at least one hand on the handlebars.
From the rack makers
- Fins face away from you, so they can't catch your leg (Lectric's instructions).
- Mind the extra width, and take extra care in wind (Epic).
- Strap bigger boards: from the rack eyelet, over the board, to the frame (Moved By Bikes).
- Weight on one side changes the handling, and the rack can touch the ground if you lean too far (Lectric).
Worked example
A 9'0" longboard on a Lectric XP (Class 2)
Length: 9'0" is past the 7–8 ft shortboard racks, so it needs a two-point longboard rack. Bike: Lectric makes its own rack for the XP line, mounted to the front rack mount and rear rack, rated to 11 ft, 6 in thick and 25 lb — a 15 lb, 3 in thick longboard is inside all three. Result: a two-point longboard side rack, with the Lectric eBike Surfboard Rack first on the list.
The ride: a Class 2 bike has a throttle, and State Parks allows only Class 1 e-bikes on the trail to Trestles — so this rider takes the roads, and stays off San Clemente’s Beach Trail, where e-bikes of every class are prohibited.

How to use it
In 4 steps
- 1Read the board's dimensions off the stringer or deck — length, width and thickness, like 6'2 × 19 × 2.6.
- 2Weigh it if you can (stand on a scale with and without it). Side racks are rated for about 25 lb.
- 3Pick your bike, whether it has a rear rack, and its class — the class label is on the frame.
- 4Read the verdict and every check behind it, then the racks that match. Each links to the maker's page.
How bike surf racks actually mount
There are three designs. Shortboard racks clamp to the seat post and hold the board on edge beside the rear wheel — they fit almost any bike, and they’re made for boards around 7 to 8 feet. Longboard racks hold the board at two points: the front at the head tube or at threaded M6 bosses on the frame, the rear at the seat post or a rear cargo rack. Frame-clamp racks bolt around the tubes of moped-style e-bikes like the RadRunner and Super73, which don’t have a conventional seat post or head tube to clamp.
The limit that matters is the rack, not the bike. The e-bike rear racks checked are rated 60 to 300 lb (60 on an Aventon Level 3, 120 on a RadRunner, 300 on a Lectric XPedition2), but every side rack with a published rating is rated for about 25 lb of board. That’s plenty for a shortboard or most longboards and not enough for many SUPs — which also need high-rise cruiser bars so the board clears the handlebars.
Before any rack goes on, the install should check the things that cause problems later: the seat-post diameter, brake and shift cables at the head tube, clearance around the battery and charge port, and that nothing clamps over a battery mount.
FAQ
Surf rack fit: questions
Can you put a surfboard rack on an e-bike?
Yes. Seat-post shortboard racks fit almost any bike, and there are longboard racks made for e-bike frames — Lectric sells its own for the XP line, Moved By Bikes makes one that bolts to the M6 bosses on Rad, Lectric, Murf, Retrospec and Hobie frames (with adapters for Aventon, Velotric, Benno and Flyer), and frame-clamp racks fit the RadRunner and Super73.
What's the weight limit on a bike surf rack?
About 25 lb of board on every side rack with a published rating: Moved By Bikes, Lectric, Carver Max, Epic and Murf. Epic's dual-mount rack with SUP arms is rated 20 lb. Heavier boards, and most SUPs, belong on a trailer.
How long a board can go on an e-bike surf rack?
Shortboard racks are made for boards around 7 to 8 ft. Longboard racks are sold for 9'6" (Epic), 10 ft (Carver Max) and 11 ft (Lectric); Moved By Bikes doesn't print a maximum. For longer boards, Moved By Bikes' trailer takes boards up to 14 ft.
Can I ride my e-bike to Trestles?
On the roads, yes. On the State Parks trail down to Trestles, only Class 1 e-bikes (pedal-assist, no throttle) are allowed; California State Parks lists Class 1 only for trail routes at San Onofre State Beach, San Clemente State Beach and Doheny. The San Clemente Beach Trail is closed to e-bikes of every class.
Can I take a surfboard on the San Clemente trolley?
Only if it's under 7 feet long and you hold it, according to the City of San Clemente.
Which way should the fins face on a bike surf rack?
Away from you, so they can't catch your leg while you pedal — that's Lectric's instruction for its rack. Strap longer boards from the rack over the board to the frame, and remember the extra width in traffic and wind.
