Repair or Replace?
The usual rule of thumb: repair when the quote is under half of what the bike is worth. E-bikes lose value fast — Upway, a used e-bike reseller, puts first-year depreciation at 30–50% and 10–20% a year after that — so a $1,500 e-bike is worth roughly $480–$851 at three years old, and a repair under about $240–$425 is usually worth doing. The calculator weighs that with the price of a new bike, the bike’s age and condition, battery recalls and whether the brand still supplies parts.

Every rule that applied, in order
- 01$550 is more than half of what the bike is worthEstimated resale value $480–$851; half of even the high end is $425. The 50% rule of thumb leans toward replacing.
- 02It's under half the price of a comparable new bike ($750)A comparable new bike costs about $1,500.
- 03A battery is the most expensive single part — test before you buyLost range has several cheaper causes (tire pressure, brake drag, a worn chain, corroded contacts). A capacity test says whether the pack is really the problem.
How this was calculated
Depreciation from Upway, a used e-bike reseller: 30–50% in the first year, then 10–20% a year. It’s the only published figure found and Upway gives no method, so the value is a range. A bike under a year old is treated as a year old. The 50% rule is a heuristic from appliance and e-bike repair guides, not a standard.
Maker replacement battery prices (Sep 21, 2026)
- Rad Power Bikes$349–$599
- Aventon$499
- Lectric$255–$595
- Ride1Up$185–$475
- Velotric$349.99–$549.99
- Super73$995
- Specialized$1,199.99–$1,299.99
- Bosch (dealer prices)$650–$1,381
Worked example
A $550 battery for a three-year-old $1,500 e-bike
Value: $1,500 × 0.5–0.7 after the first year, × 0.8–0.9 for each of the next two, gives $480–$851. Half of that is $240–$425 — and $550 is over even the high end. Half of a comparable new bike is $750, and $550 is under that.
Result: a close call — here's what tips it. The deciding questions are whether the pack is really the problem — a capacity test costs far less than a pack — and what else on the bike is due. If the frame, motor and drivetrain are sound, a new battery resets the most expensive wear item on the bike.

E-bike companies whose status affects parts and warranty
| Brand | Status (as of Sep 21, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Cowboy | ReBirth Group completed its takeover on Dec 18, 2025 and production restarted in France in Jan 2026; spare-parts availability was reported as a constraint. |
| Juiced Bikes | Collapsed in Oct 2024; the brand was bought by Lectric's founders (closed Mar 27, 2025). Legacy inventory and warranty parts were not part of the deal. |
| Rad Power Bikes | Filed Chapter 11 on Dec 15, 2025; the brand was sold to Life EV (closed Mar 5, 2026). CPSC warned on Nov 24, 2025 to stop using Rad batteries RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y and HL-RP-S1304. |
| Riese & Müller | Leaving the US market on July 31, 2026; says support, parts and warranties will be maintained. |
| Sondors | Went into receivership in late 2023; the founder bought it back and was pre-selling bikes again in June 2025, but some earlier customers were left without recourse. |
| VanMoof | Dutch company went bankrupt in July 2023 and was bought by Lavoie. US repairs moved to Rybit and are not warranty-covered. |
How to use it
In 4 steps
- 1Get a real quote — parts and labor — for the repair. A diagnosis first is worth it if nobody has measured anything yet.
- 2Enter what the bike cost new and how old it is, and what a comparable new bike costs today.
- 3Pick the brand; if it's a Rad, check the battery's model number against the CPSC warning.
- 4Read the verdict and every rule behind it. A close call usually comes down to the bike's condition and what else is due.
How to think about fixing an e-bike
The 50% rule comes from appliances: Consumer Reports used to advise replacing a product when the repair cost more than half of a new one, and EM3ev, an e-bike parts maker, uses the same line for motors. It’s a heuristic, not a standard — and it needs a value to compare against. For used e-bikes the only published depreciation figures found are Upway’s, and they’re steep: a third to a half gone in the first year.
Two things override the arithmetic. A battery under a safety warning — like the three Rad models CPSC flagged in November 2025 — should come out of service regardless, but that’s a battery decision, not a whole-bike one. And a brand that has gone under or left the market can turn a simple repair into a parts hunt: Juiced’s revival didn’t include legacy parts, and VanMoof’s US service moved to a third party.
Most e-bike repairs are nowhere near the threshold. Connectors, brake bleeds, sensors, controllers and flats are tens to low hundreds of dollars. The expensive decisions are batteries and motors — and both are worth measuring before replacing.
FAQ
Repair or replace: questions
Is it worth replacing an e-bike battery?
Usually, if the rest of the bike is sound. Maker replacement packs run about $185 to $600 for most direct-to-consumer brands (Ride1Up $185–$475, Rad $349–$599, Aventon $499, Lectric $255–$595) and $650 to $1,400 for Bosch at dealer prices. First make sure the battery is the problem: low tire pressure, dragging brakes, a worn chain and corroded contacts all cut range too.
How much is my used e-bike worth?
Roughly half to 70% of its price after one year, then 10–20% less each year, based on Upway's published depreciation figures — so about $480–$850 for a three-year-old $1,500 bike. Upway also says private sellers are typically offered around a third of retail. Condition and brand move it either way.
Can I still get parts for a Rad Power Bike?
Rad filed for Chapter 11 in December 2025 and its assets were bought by Life EV, which closed the deal on March 5, 2026. The store is selling bikes and Safe Shield batteries again, and Life EV said it would honor certain warranties. Check the battery's model number against the November 2025 CPSC warning first.
What happened to Juiced Bikes?
Juiced collapsed in October 2024. The brand was bought by the founders of Lectric in March 2025 and new models arrived in 2026, but legacy inventory and warranty parts weren't part of the purchase — parts for older Juiced bikes may take some hunting.
How much does an e-bike motor replacement cost?
EM3ev's 2026 guide puts total repair costs, including $75–$300 of labor, at $275–$750 for a geared hub motor, $225–$650 for a direct-drive hub, $600–$1,150 for a generic or Bafang mid-drive, and $850–$1,800+ for a Bosch or Shimano mid-drive. Many hub-motor faults are gears or hall sensors, which cost less than a new motor.
